between inspiration and insight

I am just a college student interested in things that are pretty, creative, funky, unique, handmade, vintage/vintage inspired, repurposed, peaceful... etc. Really anything that catches my eye. I guess that explains my blog. Read on!

I dream of Stella & Dot.....

So I went to the Sway Chic spring fashion show last night in the torrential downpour that hit Santa Cruz. Unfortunately due to poor planning on my part my friend Zach and I missed it except for the last four outfits. Wah wah wah... But I did get to reintroduce myself to Cheyenne, one of the fabulous managers of the store here on Pacific Ave. in Santa Cruz. My friend Katie is working her way up in their business and I have wanted to get involved there with a job forever now! Maybe one day...... But the whole experience did bring me across the perfect internship for my Business and Art interests. When I was looking on the Sway Facebook page I say an advertisement in their sponsors for a Stella & Dot internship. I had never heard of Stella & Dot before, but it said that it was for entrepreneurship and business experience so I had to check it out. And when I did, I found that it was even more awesome than I had imagined! They sell some beautiful jewelry through their website and trunk shows. The trunk shows is where I would be involved for the internship. So I would be paid and learning invaluable experience learning the in's and out's of building a business. The jewelry pieces below are just a few of my favorites. The Marrakesh Bib Necklace is by far my very favorite though.

Check them out and wish me luck on getting the internship!

A Little Free People Magic....

So I was browsing through the DIY's on Honestly WTF the other day and I came across a picture of a colorful fishtail braid from Free Peoples September Catalog that inspired me to dye my hair! I always like to change it up with the mop I have on my head (it really does feel that way sometimes) and since I am in an effort to grow it out for the next year or two I have to get my change from color and shape. This picture really helps me out. I won't be able to do it for a couple months because my Aunt Michelle does my hair and I don't trust anyone else. But as soon as I can get out to spend some time with her I will get it done. :)

As for my present obsession.... I returned to the Free People website this week (after falling in love with the fishtail) for the first time in a long time and remembered how much I enjoy the fashion world. So I started a list of things that I totally dig.............

Latest Insights!

So I have been going through the motions of life as of recently and I found myself in a bit of an emotional low with a little too much stress regarding school, work, money, friends, boyfriend, etc. . I tend to be a bit too sensitive at times and it was really beginning to get the better of me, so I decided to start a blog to display all of the artsy crafty things that I want to do and that I find superbly awesome and relieves my mind. And as I was surfing the web looking for things to inspire me, I had a sort of life epiphany when I saw a digitally decorated phrase....

"Que Sera, Sera. What will be, will be."

I can continue to work hard and I can continue to push myself, but I have to ease my mind by doing things I love and let my life fall into place! This realization brought me peace of mind in a way I can't even describe.

So today I took my new found inspiration and insight to this place called the Bargain Barn here in Santa Cruz and went wild! This place is an outlet for Goodwill and is a frenzy of thrifty shoppers lined up outside for their 10 a.m. opening time. With bags in hand these shoppers (me, my friend Zach, and about 30 other people) strode into the warehouse full of bin after bin piled high with clothing, shoes, books, and other knick knacks. This was utterly delightful to say the least as I began to fill my bags with 90's dresses, a super cool pea-coat, an awesome leather jacket, some slouch boots that fit perfectly and a ton of my favorite grandpa sweaters! And after two hours of searching I came up to the register with four huge bags full of things and all for $30 dollars. I mean that was a steal if I have ever seen one! As soon as I can there will be pictures displaying my finds. Until then imagine a warehouse of everything you ever wanted to create a better you. It's wishful thinking, but it felt like the birth of a whole new Renee.

Have a Crazy, Fun, Wonderful Weekend!

The Book Surgeon: Brian Dettmer

Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed."

These whimsical books are really inspiring. The idea of cutting away to get something so simple but also so intricate is wonderful. He has a genuine skill of repurposing these old books. Bravo.

Sir Mix-A-Lot Of Pens

I want to make this into a board so that when I move around I can have it still, since I obviously can't mount anything like this on my walls in my apartment. I think I will make it my first DIY project. Get ready!

My First Post: Isn't she cute?

I am going to this ball with my boyfriend. It's a headdress ball where, as I understand it, the ladies of Upland (including his mother) perform while wearing themed headdresses. Interesting, I know. But I am looking forward to the opportunity to wear this and get all dressed up. It makes me wish I lived about 100 years ago where it wasn't out of ordinary to dress to the nine ever so often.
